MAEKO at the 2019 UN Solutions Summit
Chelsea Chee and MAEKO were featured among ten solution makers at the 2019 United Nations Solutions Summit in New York.
Why was MAEKO featured at the 2019 Solutions Summit?
MAEKO was selected for its approach to treating food waste at the source through aerobic composting. The event brought ten solution makers to an audience at the United Nations General Assembly.
The summit was co-organised by the UN Foundation, the UN Local2030 Hub, shift7 and the Global Innovation Exchange. Selection recognised the initiative; it was not product certification.
The milestone in 2019
The UN Foundation's September 2019 profile reported that MAEKO had converted more than four million kilograms of food waste into compost. That is a historical figure from the profile, not a claim of independent tonnage verification.
From the kitchen back to soil
MAEKO's composters treat accepted food waste where it is generated and produce compost for suitable planting and landscaping uses. The system is selected for the waste stream and conditions at each site.
