Impact · Certified B Corporation

One machine in one kitchen, and everything that follows from it.

MAEKO treats food waste in the building that made it. This page is about what happens next: the compost, the emissions it can help reduce, and the people it reaches.

Certified B Corporation

Checked by people who do not work here.

B Corp certification is an independent assessment, by B Lab, of a company’s social and environmental performance. It looks at how the company is governed, and at how it treats its workers, its community, the environment and its customers. MAEKO holds it.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals

Seven of the seventeen goals, and what we do for each.

The United Nations set seventeen goals for 2030. Our machines, the compost they make and the MAEKO Academy support seven of them. Each tile gives the goal, the target it names, and what we actually do.

Sacks of MAEKO compost stacked on bare earth beside a planting bed on a farm.
Compost, bagged, at a farm.
UN Sustainable Development Goal 1, No PovertyNo poverty
Target 1.1 · end extreme poverty
The compost
Compost made from food waste is a product, and it can be sold. Selling suitable compost can support income-generating community projects.
UN Sustainable Development Goal 2, Zero HungerZero hunger
Target 2.4 · sustainable food production, resilient farming
The machine
A fast composting process for farm waste, and composters sized for community and urban farms. A farm can return compost to its growing beds.
The compost
It goes back into the soil as bio-organic compost. It can improve soil structure and support plant growth when applied appropriately.
UN Sustainable Development Goal 11, Sustainable Cities and CommunitiesSustainable cities and communities
Target 11.6 · reduce the environmental impact of cities, waste included
The machine
Food waste treated on site, in the city that made it. The machines fit schools, housing, markets, food courts and other city facilities. Treating accepted food waste locally reduces the amount sent to landfill.
UN Sustainable Development Goal 12, Responsible Consumption and ProductionResponsible consumption and production
Targets 12.4, 12.5 and 12.3 · manage waste safely, make less of it, halve food waste
The machine
Treating separated food waste on site supports responsible waste management and resource recovery.
The compost
Food waste is recycled into nutrient-rich compost and used again, as a soil enhancer.
The Academy
MAEKO food-waste awareness programmes teach students and communities practical ways to reduce, recycle and reuse.
UN Sustainable Development Goal 13, Climate ActionClimate action
Targets 13.2 and 13.3 · climate measures in planning; knowledge and skills
The machine
Composting food waste with air, instead of burying it, makes far less greenhouse gas. Between 66 and 85 per cent less than landfill, measured in a SIRIM Life Cycle Inventory Analysis; the figure varies by model. Food waste rotting in landfill helps warm the planet; treating it at the source is a practical way for a country to cut its carbon.
The Academy
The awareness programme gives students and communities the knowledge and the skills to do something about climate change, and to adapt to it.
UN Sustainable Development Goal 15, Life on LandLife on land
Target 15.3 · restore degraded land and soil
The compost
Appropriate compost application can help improve degraded soil. It returns nutrients, organic matter and useful microbes to the ground.
UN Sustainable Development Goal 17, Partnerships for the GoalsPartnerships for the goals
Targets · a stronger global partnership; effective partnerships across public, private and civil society
The machine
Green technology, built in Malaysia, for the sustainability practice the world now needs and the practical ways to cut emissions.
The Academy
Academy programmes bring several partners together at once: NGOs, communities, companies and local councils, on programmes that support the goals.
In the community

Awareness programmes, so that a habit changes.

Run by MAEKO Academy, for neighbourhoods and for the young. Three of them come to where people already are.

Composting-on-Wheels

A composting truck comes to the neighbourhood. People bring their food waste and take compost home.

Composting workshops

Hands-on sessions for schools, staff and community groups: sorting food waste, composting it, and planting with what it makes.

Where the machines are

Two hundred sites. Here are some of them.

Examples from Malaysia and overseas, grouped by sector. These sites show the range of settings where MAEKO machines are installed.

A shopping mall

A CW500 composter, running since 2021. Less greenhouse gas, lower waste-management and pest-control costs, and a CSR programme built around it.

A white composter house with a green mesh roof and a MAEKO sign, built in a car park.
A convention centre

A composting machine since 2017. Less greenhouse gas, lower waste-management and pest-control costs, and compost for the staff and the landscapers.

A corporate group

One green initiative across a mall, a hotel, a medical centre and a university. Compost used on site and sold, savings on disposal, and a staff campaign to compost and plant.
